«The judge and his hangman» - Chinese translation

Crown Culture Association published the Chinese translation (traditional characters) of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s crime novel “The Jugde and his Hangman” on 27th December 2021 in Taiwan. Trade Office of Swiss Industries in Taipei together with the publisher hosted a book launch event at Eslite Bookstore in Taipei where Professor Hui Chun Cheng from Department of German, Tamkang University and Editor-in-chief Ting Ting Hsu spoke about Dürrenmatt’s life, work and the importance of the newly published book to a full house of enthusiastic audience. Many Taiwanese crime thriller authors have also written articles to recommend the book. “Romulus der Grosse” is the other book that has been published in Taiwan.

For the centennial of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s birth, the Consulate General of Switzerland – together with the “Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel CDN” – gave through different activities an insight into the life and works of the famous Swiss author, dramaturge and (less known) painter Friedrich Dürrenmatt.

On October 28, the German department of the “Universidad de Zaragoza” opened an exhibition on the life of Dürrenmatt on their campus in the presence of members of the Consulate General.

In the “Center de Cultura Contemporànea de Barcelona - CCCB” on December 2nd, the “Associació de Germanistes de Catalunya (AGC)” organized a panel discussion entitled “Dürrenmatt, fer visible el món”, in which famous local actors and theater directors took part. Their experiences with pieces by Dürrenmatt in Catalonia were discussed. The event concluded with the reading of texts in Catalan / German by the two actors Arthur Haering and Neus Pàmies.

Film cycle in the “FilmoTeca” in Barcelona with the films “Justice” (December 2nd), “Dürrenmatt - a love story” (December 14th) with a virtual introduction via zoom by Ms. Madeleine Betschart / Head of the CDN and “Hyenas” (21st December).

On December 14th, the “Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona - UAB” opened an exhibition in the library of the Faculty of Philology and Humanities in the presence of representatives of the Consulate General of Switzerland in Barcelona. Parallel to the exhibition, which will be shown until January 31, there will also be a video about the life of the Swiss art all-rounder.
In the afternoon at the same university a video conference on the diverse works of Dürrenmatt took place in the translation and interpretation faculty with Mrs. Madeleine Betschart, Head of the CDN.

Between students of the German language at the “Universitat Barcelona - UB” and Mrs. Betschart a virtual exchange took place on December 15th via ZOOM, in which, among other things, “The visit of the old lady” could be thematized and discussed.

The Play “The Ward” - Vancouver

The Ward

For the centennial of Friedrich Dürrenmat’s birth, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver presents "The Ward", a fictionalized sequel to Friedrich Dürrenmatt's "The Visit". Convicted of the murder of Alfred Ill and locked up in a mental institution for 10 years, the former headmaster of Güllen must now convince a panel of doctors of his innocence. Written by Joel Mark Harris and directed by Josias Tschanz, the play is performed by actor Georgie Daburas.

For the centennial of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's birth and 16 days of activism against gender-based-violence, feminist organization Bonhishikha stages a live reading and moderated discussion of Dürrenmatt’s play “The Visit”.

Touching on many issues such as gender and wealth inequality, social development and justice, the Swiss author’s 1956 play “The Visit” keeps gaining relevance in contemporary Bangladesh and Switzerland.

The reading will be live on the Facebook page of the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh on 1st of December 2021 at 2M (Swiss time).

À l'occasion du 100e anniversaire de l'écrivain suisse Friedrich Dürrenmatt, l'ambassade de Suisse et le Goethe-Institut Israël vous invitent à la première lecture scénique en hébreu de la nouvelle "le tunnel » par l'acteur suisse israélien Meni Gross à la bibliothèque Beit Ariela de Tel Aviv le 11 octobre 2021. 

"Die Panne" alle teatro di Kiev «Suzirja»

Nella primavera del 2021 il teatro di Kiev «Suzirja» ha presentato l’opera di Dürrenmatt Die Panne, di grande successo in Ucraina. La regia è di Taras Zhyrko.

L’attore principale dell’opera Yevhen Nyschuk, ex-ministro della cultura ucraino, ha affermato: «La sua opera ci aiuta a trovare la ragione in questo mondo. Abbiamo scelto di aggiungere il sottotitolo «Una sosta su una strada». Questa sosta porta il protagonista a ripensare la sua vita. Per il nostro tempo l’opera ha quindi un significato e un’importanza profondi, direi persino esistenziali».

Mostra «A century of legacy: A journey to Switzerland through Dürrenmatt» all’Università di Tamkang a Taipei

Tamkang University

Nell’ambito di una serie di eventi per il centenario della nascita dell’autore, drammaturgo e pittore svizzero Friedrich Dürrenmatt, il Trade Office of Swiss Industries di Taipei, in collaborazione con la Chueh Sheng Memorial Library e il dipartimento di tedesco dell’Università di Tamkang, ha organizzato una mostra dedicata alla vita e alle opere di Dürrenmatt.

Tenutasi dal 14 aprile al 31 maggio 2021 alla Chueh Sheng Memorial Library dell’Università di Tamkang a Taipei, ha presentato al pubblico taiwanese informazioni su Dürrenmatt, il Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel e la Svizzera in generale, con l’obiettivo di fargli conoscere questo patrimonio nazionale svizzero.

Con lo stesso spirito, il Trade Office of Swiss Industries ha incoraggiato la traduzione in cinese tradizionale del romanzo «Il giudice e il suo boia», la cui pubblicazione è prevista entro la fine del 2021.

Oltre alla mostra, diversi professori e professoresse sono intervenuti a conferenze incentrate sui temi sopra citati. 

Il romanzo a fumetti «I fisici» al Vancouver Comic Arts Festival

L’illustratore e fumettista Benjamin Gottwald ha firmato l’adattamento di un classico in romanzo a fumetti: «I fisici» del drammaturgo svizzero Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Nel mese di maggio presenta questa sua opera al Vancouver Comic Arts Festival in cooperazione con il Consolato generale di Svizzera a Vancouver. 

La trama de «I fisici» si svolge in una casa di cura in cui tre fisici fingono di essere pazzi. «Nel mio adattamento lo spazio stesso diventa uno dei protagonisti, il quarto paziente», spiega Benjamin Gottwald. Il fumettista rivela i segreti del suo processo creativo in questo video.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt in Russia

Literaturhaus Moskau

La Casa della letteratura di Mosca ha inaugurato una mostra (18 maggio – 30 giugno 2021) che riunisce alcuni quadri di Dürrenmatt in dialogo con quelli dello scrittore russo Andreï Biély. La mostra mette in luce la loro opera pittorica, meno nota al grande pubblico ma strettamente legata alla loro attività letteraria, e rende omaggio alle relazioni culturali tra la Svizzera e la Russia.

La mostra è realizzata dal Ministero della cultura russo, dall’Ambasciata di Svizzera a Mosca, dal Museo statale di storia della letteratura di Mosca e dal Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel. Nadia Sikorsky vi dedica un interessante articolo in francese.

Per il centenario della nascita di Friedrich Dürrenmatt, le Ambasciate svizzere negli Stati Uniti e i Consolati generali di Svizzera ad Atalanta e Chicago hanno invitato diverse scuole e università a partecipare a un concorso di scrittura. Grazie alle tracce proposte dalle rappresentanze svizzere, i giovani partecipanti hanno avuto l’opportunità di confrontarsi con l’opera dell’autore e pittore svizzero. 

In occasione della consegna dei premi si è svolta anche una tavola rotonda intorno alla figura di Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
